What Are Sun Spots?

Unsightly but Not Uncommon

Sun spots, clinically known as Tinea Versicolor, is a common skin fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of a yeast on the skin's surface.

Such yeast are normally present in small numbers on the skin. However, those who develop sun spots have an overgrowth of yeast that causes uneven skin color, scaling and sometimes itching.

In certain conditions, such as those that can cause the skin to become warm, oily, and/or moist, the yeast can overgrow and cause a rash, consisting of tan, pink, brown or white patches.

It is estimated that between 6 to 24 million Americans suffer from sun spots. This skin condition commonly affects young adults between the ages of 18-35, who live in warm and humid climates. It is thought that the yeast feeds on skin oils as well as dead skin cells.
